BCCC Issue Notice Against Zindagi for ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam’ Serial |This Show paints Indians as villains.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd’s (ZEEL) Hindi entertainment channel Zindagi has been issued a notice by the Broadcast Content Complaints Council (BCCC) for airing pro-Pakistan content in a serial. The broadcast redressal authority has sent the notice for inflammatory content in the serial ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam’.
As per reports, the BCCC headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal has summoned the channel’s executives for a hearing on 22 May. According to a Times of India report, a Zee official has denied receiving the notice so far.
The report adds that the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has not taken any action so far but has forwarded the complaints it received to the BCCC. Keeping in view the ‘sensitivity’ of the matter, the BCCC has asked the channel to respond to the complaints.
The channel could be asked to modify the content or desist from re-telecast. The serial gained attention from the BCCC after receiving complaints from some viewers. The complainants claimed that the content was inflammatory in nature and promoted Pakistan’s narrative of the partition. The show has finished its 23rd-episode run in April.
Describing it as a ‘beautiful, timeless’ love story, a Zindagi channel executive told TOI that the response to the serial was very encouraging. “The soap could be set against the backdrop of any country that underwent the harsh reality of partition.
The show was telecast as ‘Dastan’ in Pakistan and we have made necessary changes to telecast it for the Indian audience. We have followed all broadcast guidelines,” he said.
The main criticism from some viewers has been that it shows the partition only from Pakistan’s point of view and paints Indians as villains. Some viewers have complained that Sikhs and Hindus are portrayed as perpetrators of atrocities on Muslims.
As per reports, the complaints claim that a few episodes highlighted Indian Muslim League and MA Jinnah as heroes fighting the Congress against discrimination of Muslims in the country.
Starring Fawad Khan in the lead role with Pakistani actor Sanam Baloch as Bano, the show is a love story in the backdrop of the partition based on author Razia Butt’s book ‘Bano’.
