Bombay Velvet is an upcoming Hindi neo-noir drama film directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables. Set in Bombay
of the 1960s, the film tells the story of a boxer, Johnny Balraj, and
an aspiring jazz singer, Rosie, and how their hopes and dreams collide
with their individual realities. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles with Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Raveena Tandon and Siddharth Basu appearing in supporting roles. The film is scheduled for release on May 15, 2015.
Kashyap was inspired to make such a film after reading L.A. Quartet, a sequence of four crime fiction novels by James Ellroy, set in the late 1940s through the late 1950s in Los Angeles. The novels inspired him to "dig into the dark trenches of the history of Bombay",where he "found a treasure trove that was never-ending".
Ranbir Kapoor will be portraying a street fighter, whilst Anushka Sharma will appear as a jazz singer, as well as his love interest in the film.
Director Karan Johar will make his full-fledged acting debut, where he will enact the role of the primary antagonist, Kaizad Khambatta. His role is said to have been inspired from Russi Karanjia. On Karan's acting, Vikas Bahl of Phantom Films has said “I think there is a beautiful actor hidden in Karan. I simply love his ads. I'm sure he'll make the character bigger than the actor.”
On his decision to do the film Ranbir Kapoor stated that, "There is no process in selecting the kind of work I do. I'm fortunate to be working with some of the best filmmakers. The script of "Bombay Velvet" just fell into my lap. I read it and I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of Anurag's grand vision, his innovative storytelling, his movie-making process; everything that he does so perfectly."
The first schedule of Bombay Velvet started in the third week of July 2013 and continued till 1st week of September 2013.The first schedule was shot at Sri Lanka's Ranmihitenna Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele Cinema Park, Hambantota getting the distinction of being the first foreign film to be filmed there.
